Description:

This intensive 40-hour Basic Family Mediation course provides participants with a comprehensive foundation in the theories, principles, and practical skills required for effective family mediation. Through an engaging, experiential learning approach, participants learn from experienced family mediators and build their skills through realistic role plays, case studies, guided exercises, discussions, readings, assignments, and professional resources. The program explores the nature and dynamics of conflict, negotiation theory, power imbalances, cultural safety, ethical practice, and strategies for supporting meaningful participation by all parties, including hearing and incorporating the child’s voice in mediation.

The course also provides extensive training in the family mediation process, including communication, listening, writing, and settlement-drafting skills. Participants develop the knowledge and techniques needed to mediate parenting plans, child and spousal support, income determination, property division, and high-conflict parenting disputes. In addition, the program covers relevant legal principles, standards of practice, certification pathways, and practical guidance for establishing a family mediation practice, while offering intensive role-play opportunities with individualized coaching to strengthen confidence and competence.
