Being heard is a lily pad along the way. 13:48:47 From Jim Melamed to Everyone: important to strategically keep everyone in the boat going down the river 13:49:38 From Darcy Thompson to Everyone: Reacted to "important to strateg..." with 👍🏽 13:54:02 From Nancy Boyle to Everyone: Reacted to "important to strateg..." with 👍🏽 13:58:19 From Melissa Farag to Everyone: When I was focused on litigating, I was devastated to learn I had such high empathy scores. Now that I’m focused on mediating, it’s a badge of honor and I’m proud of it. 13:58:38 From Darcy Thompson to Everyone: I wonder how many of us had Empathizer in their top 2 or 3 strengths . . . 13:58:54 From Melissa Farag to Everyone: Reacted to "I wonder how many of…" with 👍 13:59:02 From Dawna Bentley to Everyone: Reacted to "I wonder how many of..." with 👍 13:59:16 From David Hoffman (he/him) to Everyone: Yes - authenticity is key. The Hollywood saying about this ("when you can fake authenticity, you've got it made") might work for professional actors but not mediators. 13:59:56 From Darcy Thompson to Everyone: Reacted to "Yes - authenticity i..." with 👍🏽 14:00:14 From Karen Aurit to Everyone: Reacted to "Yes - authenticity i..." with ♥️ 14:00:55 From Jim Melamed to Everyone: Folks, I apologize for this, but I previously committed to an additional forum at 11 am Pacific time. One piece that I wonder about possibly “missing” is the criticality of our flexibility as mediators. One of my favorite quotes is, “The most flexible component of the system controls the system . . . I do believe that we as mediators want to be that most flexible component. 14:01:49 From Jovana Kuvac to Everyone: Reacted to "Yes - authenticity i..." with ♥️ 14:05:19 From Dan Gulden to Everyone: Interesting documentary/film “The Last White Knight” by Paul Saltzman about his initial confrontation in 1965 with the son of Brian Beckwith (convicted of murdering Medgar Evers) and his connection over more than 50 years of conversations and interviews with honest conversations between former adversaries without patronizing or necessarily agreeing. 14:06:16 From Anna Dennin to Everyone: I mediated a small civil case (telephonic) with five people all very emotional and and all suing each other. Crazy. I felt like all my strengths were being tested. 14:09:03 From Alex Glassmann to Everyone: Inspired by the recent surge in popularity for couples mediation: How do the panelists leverage their respective strengths to deal with the unilateral nature of the choice of the “divorcer/Spouse A” to end the marriage? (In contrast to the impotence of the “divorcee/Spouse B,” and their lack of power to keep the marriage alive?) In other words, we all here at APFM probably believe in the potential for a reluctant “divorcee/Spouse B” to get their needs met and find a good outcome, despite the marriage ending. That’s the good stuff that justifies our profession. But, what about the flip side: the potential that the would-be-“divorcer/Spouse A” could get their needs met and find a good outcome, despite staying married? How do the panelists use their strengths to deal with that structural difference between the parties? 14:11:45 From John Palmer, Chair TMCA to Everyone: Reacted to "I wonder how many of..." with 👍 14:14:41 From Melissa Farag to Everyone: 2 memes? lol 14:15:41 From Darcy Thompson to Everyone: Replying to "Internal Family Syst..." JP Palmer 14:16:56 From David Hoffman (he/him) to Everyone: Reacted to "Thanks for sharing." with 👍 14:21:28 From Amy Robertson to Everyone: Re Andrew's client: does this person not have access to their financial information, is this a power grab to delay the process and maintain the status quo or ? 14:21:54 From Darcy Thompson to Everyone: @Andrew - I find it helpful to start with remembering that this person "does not live in my house." Therefore, he/she cannot affect my personal peace. Then in response I try to remove the "wall" or opportunity for conflict by sliding the wall aside. My response to the posts that I find offensive might be: "Thanks for your responses." I think it doesn't give the person what may have been the hoped for negative reply to their "offensive posts." The unexpected reply from me hopefully opens a line of communication. Maybe, it was a way of letting off steam . . . 14:22:14 From Andrew Weber to Everyone: Interesting thought, Amy.
