Session Title & Description:

The Art of Pre-Marital Mediation

Nothing throws a wet blanket on an engaged couple’s excitement like either party bringing up their need for a prenuptial agreement. The emotional “We/Us/Ours” feeling of courtship instantly devolves into an emotional marker that broadcasts “Me/Mine/Yours”. This workshop will discuss mediation frameworks, strategies, and interventions that not only help educate the betrothed couple but help them create a fundamental basis for relationship success in handling their assets and finances. Adding premarital mediation to your service offerings can expand the clients you work with and provide a rewarding experience for the mediator. The panelists will discuss the different types of agreements and situations for premarital mediation and will share any challenging circumstances they’ve faced in these mediations.

Asking Next Level Questions

As mediators we are trained to ask questions and be curious. But what happens when those questions do not get clients talking about their needs, interests and goals. Sometimes not knowing what questions to ask next can lead to impasse or a failed mediation. Join us to learn from international experts who will discuss their techniques and approaches for moving past basic questions that demonstrate curiosity towards asking questions that demonstrate understanding and connection with clients.

Saturday Morning Plenary: Reflective Practice

As practitioners, we seek to grow in our confidence and competence to better the experience for our clients. But how can we do this in practice, particularly as sole practitioners? Led by Michael Lang, our reflective practice group will teach you the principals of reflective practice, how to participate in a reflective practice group, and how to add a reflective practice to your work. The phrase “Practice Makes Perfect,” suggests that experience determines competence. Experience alone does not produce competence. Repetition leads to acting on auto-pilot. Mastery is achieved when we use our experiences as learning opportunities. Join us in learning how to improve your practice and experience as a professional.

Racial Nuance and Code Switching

The purpose of this discussion is awareness to supplement your facilitation skills. Arguably, a third party neutral must be aware of the many consequences of white privilege. One such immediate effect is that African-Americans are required to lead a binary existence called Code Switching. Code-switching for black folks is a unique type of psychological vigilance which is necessary for survival in an intrinsically hostile society.

Closing Plenary – Stretching Ourselves from the Inside Out

Come to the last session of the conference and learn how other experienced mediators stretch themselves from the inside out! We will have five lively presentations with designated commentators and opportunity for the audience to ask questions or participate. We hope for some in-depth sharing. The topics include tips for dealing with your own bias; expressing your authentic self; deciding to mediate in an area for which you have little or no expertise; and others.
